Sophia Ikura, Founder & Executive Director

Sophia is founder and executive director of Health Commons. She has held senior executive roles inside government and in Crown Agencies, and in politics. As Senior Director of Strategy and Community Engagement for the Toronto regional health authority (previously the Local Health Integration Network), Sophia was responsible for engaging with a broad range of health system leaders and large number of diverse communities across the 1.2 million people for whom the LHIN was responsible to delivering the full range of health care services. These engagements informed strategic directions for health system planning including the introduction of population health management approaches to closing gaps in equity for specific populations.

Over the course of a five year period, Sophia served as a senior advisor to the Premier of Ontario and three health Ministers on matters related to health system funding reform, the development and implementation of a provincial quality agenda, health human resources, public health, wait times management, home and community care and hospitals.

These roles were preceded by her time as the Director of the Nursing Secretariat, working on the developing and implementation of a four year nursing human resource plan that guided a $180M in recruitment and retention activities and resulted in the growth of the workforce through investments in over 12,000 nursing positions across the health sector. Sophia holds a Masters of Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Queens University.

Sophia launched Health Commons to dedicate space to building practical solutions that address health disparities. Rooted in the deep expertise of communities and in the lived experiences of community members, the lab draws together service design, community engagement, co design and policy expertise to build hyper local solutions for better and more equitable health outcomes.
